British American Tobacco is a world-leading tobacco company that sells over 200 markets and in 2017 has been the leader in over 55 of them.
The company’s three regions – Americas and Sub–Saharan Africa, Europe & North Africa, Asia-Pacific & Middle East, and since 2017 also Reynolds American Inc. (USA) cover six continents. The Group holds robust market position in each of these regions and holds a leading position in more than 55 markets.
British American Tobacco has sustained a significant global presence for more than 100 years. It was founded in 1902 by the merger of British Imperial Tobacco Company and American Tobacco Company. The company was registered on the London Stock Exchange in 1911. By 1912 it became one of the world’s top dozen companies by market capitalization. In January 1999, British American Tobacco merged with Rothmans International - the fourth largest producer of tobacco products at that time.
The British American Tobacco manufactures tobacco products in 45 factories in 42 countries, and has offices around the world, and thus holds a significant role in the market.
The Group employs more than 50,000 people worldwide; with many more indirectly employed through its supply chain - suppliers, contractors, distributors and retailers, as well as over 90,000 directly contracted tobacco farmers.

BAT’s Standards of Business Conduct (“SoBC”) express the high standards of business integrity that we require from our companies and employees worldwide. Supplier Code of Conduct, which was introduced by BAT, complements the SoBC by defining the minimum standards we expect our suppliers to adhere to. This Code supports our continuing commitment to respect human rights and uphold international standards, including the United Nations (UN) Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises.
